Commodore Zakiur Rahman Bhuiyan joined Bangladesh Navy in October 1977 as an Officer Cadet and commissioned in Electrical Branch in April 1980. He Completed BSc Engineering in Electrical and Electronics from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Dhaka. He completed Long Electrical Specialization Course from INS Valsura, India in 1985. He is a graduate of Defense Services Command and Staff College (DSCSC), Dhaka, Bangladesh. He is also a graduate of Armed Forces Staff College, Malaysia. He has completed Masters in Defense Studies under National University, Gazipur, Bangladesh and MBA in Executive Management under Royal Roads University, Canada.

He served onboard various ships of Bangladesh Navy in various capacity. Besides this, he held various important appointments like Directing Staff in DSCSC, Instructor in Electrical School, Staff Officer, Director and Naval Secretary in Naval Headquarters. Presently he is appointed as Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Logistics).
