Captain M Shafiul Azam, (E) psc, BN obtained his graduation from BUET in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. He did his Marine Engineering Specialization from Royal Naval Engineering College, UK. He is a graduate of Defence Services command and Staff College of Bangladesh and Armed Forces Staff College of Germany. He has received his Masters in Defence Studies (MDS) from the National University of Peoples Republic of Bangladesh.

He served as Engineer Officer on board different naval ships and held staff appointments in various capacities including Director of Naval Engineering in the Naval Headquarters. He performed instructional duties in the Engineering School of BN and Bangladesh Naval Academy (Junior Staff Course) and also in the Defence Services Command and Staff College of Bangladesh (as a Directing Staff). He assumed various duties in the Bangladesh Navy Dockyard including the duties of Manager (Planning and Estimating) and Manager (Production).
